Our Story:
Apexa, who grew up in New York has a strong Vedic background; and Swapna, who grew up in South India has a strong western medicine background (oh, the irony!). The ladies, both in their 40s at the time, during one conversation, were sharing their skin routines with each other, both attempting to soften the aging process, but in slightly different methods.
They realized their shared passion, and it started a journey along many different paths, which culminated in the founding of the skincare line, Ajaram.
About Us
Our Paths
Co-founder Apexa: Apexa grew up in New York, heavily connected in the practices of Yoga and Ayurveda from a very young age. Among many other day-to-day applications, her family utilized the principles of Ayurveda to heal when they were sick, invoked the Ayurvedic remedies for beauty (making homemade masks and scrubs), and were steeped into Patanjali’s eight limbs of Yoga. It made for quite a spiritual childhood. Those applications were carried into adulthood, and to Apexa, a practicing attorney, it became obvious that the holistic approach of Yoga and Ayurveda was grounding, calming, and necessary in her busy life. Unlike the practice of Yoga (in its physical aspect – asana studios can be found in virtually every city), the knowledge of the healing system of Ayurveda is not as prevalent.
As a certified and practicing Yoga teacher, she continue to teach Yoga asana classes and Ayurvedic courses, and always a student, attending others as well, she brings you the best of this ancient eastern wisdom. Starting with the Ayurvedic remedies of beauty and self-care routines from her youth, Apexa shared her idea of a starting a skincare line with her friend Swapna, who happens to be a physician. From personal experience, she was convinced that the healing and rejuvenating benefits of an Ayurvedic practice should be shared and accessible to everyone. Together, they decided to combine Swapna’s strong background in modern, western medicine with Apexa’s knowledge of the ancient principles of the Ayurvedic system to make a powerful, effective skincare line.
Co-founder Swapna: During Swapna’s training as a medical student more than 30 years ago at Kottayam Medical College in Kerala, India, she learned the physical (anatomy), chemical (biochemistry) and functional (physiology) human mysteries with awe. She devoured the knowledge of disease states (pathology) and their treatment (pharmacology) grounded in rigorously tested science. Having followed her dear husband to the United States, in a post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the New York Medical College Hospital, Swapna opened her eyes to the splendor and limitations of the western, modern day health care system. While she could prescribe blood pressure medicines and water pills that her patients needed, it was those who tapped into their spirit for self-care and survival that ultimately had the best outcomes. Despite growing up in India, my connection to the medical system of Ayurveda was limited, having concentrated in the allopathic sciences. The global growth of the alternative medicine industry and the lingering yearning for realizing the unfulfilled needs in medicine propelled her to marry the eastern and western knowledge and philosophy. This has led her to develop a more personal appreciation of her heritage while aligning the dual approach as a viable and productive solution for many unmet needs in the healthcare landscape.
